AI is no longer just a tool; it has become a transformative force. In some workplaces, employees are naming their AI assistants, confiding in them, and even turning to them when they feel isolated.
It's a fascinating trend, but it raises an uncomfortable question: if AI is becoming our “teammate,” what does that mean for workplace belonging and conflict?
The truth is, many employees feel disconnected. Hybrid schedules and digital overload have already stretched workplace bonds thin. Now AI is stepping into that gap, but it's a double-edged sword.
Belonging vs. Substitution: AI may temporarily ease loneliness, but it can't replace an authentic human connection.
Miscommunication Risks: When employees rely on AI to draft communications, tone and intent can be lost, fueling unnecessary conflict.
Trust at Stake: If colleagues feel others are “hiding behind AI,” resentment and disconnection may grow.
Steps Leaders Can Take:
Name the Role of AI: Be transparent about how AI should (and should not) be used for communication and collaboration.
Prioritize Human Connection: Build in intentional time for human-to-human dialogue, team check-ins, mentoring, and even informal connections.
Normalize Conversation About Belonging: Ask employees what makes them feel connected at work, and create space for those practices.
AI may fill a gap, but genuine human connections are what truly matter for belonging.
How can we ensure that technology serves as a bridge to deeper relationships rather than a substitute for them?
This is something that consultants like me are currently working with companies on. We know that not everything is a one-size-fits-all solution.
I'd love to hear how your workplace is navigating this balance.
